You’re a big kid now,you proclaim. Your mom says you announce this as you walk around on your tiptoes with your chest puffed out.We certainly love how big and smart you’re becoming, but don’t grow up TOO fast.

Here we are, three generations of firstborn women. Missing from the photo would be my great-grandmother, also the eldest among her siblings. This was why I was initially hoping for a girl, but my baby boy will be breaking the tradition! Despite that, he will still be an important part of our close-knit family and will continue on with the legacy of love.

I remember when I was able to participate in my own country’s history. It was late 2000, and a scandal broke out involving then-President Joseph Estrada, and millions of pesos of jueteng money. He was impeached in January 2001, and millions of Filipinos watched his trial on TV. Despite the tedium and length, people were glued to the proceedings, in the markets, at businesses, everywhere. Then came the historic Senate vote on whether to open the envelope supposedly containing further evidence against Estrada. When the final count ended in NO, the people were outraged and took to the streets. I was one of those people. We wore black ribbons around our arms and rallied to oust Estrada. With millions amassed at the EDSA shrine, the armed forces withdrew their support for Estrada, and VP Gloria Arroyo was sworn in as president. We had done it. The people had made their voices heard. And I had played a part in that moment of Philippine history. I have no photos to show for it, but I will not forget when our collective voices made all the difference.

My mom is so looking forward to becoming a grandma! As much as she adores all her grand-nephews and nieces (as you can tell from this photo with Idris), she is so excited to meet her grandson-to-be Dylan Abe! I myself can’t wait to see my mom with my baby boy. I know such a great mom will definitely be an awesome grandma!
